Technology Created Organized Religion. Next Project: Cults For & Against the Singularity

So…  What’s a Singularity, Yo? Futurism, Techno-Sociology, Technological Anthropology, Sociotechnological Studies, Anthrobotic Sociology – or just, you know, generic human science or whatever, has borrowed from cosmology & astrophysics the concept of a “singularity,” and capitalized it.  Very basically, it’s where the rules break down – gravity, time, and space go bananas.  Regarding human technology, it centers around us producing an intelligence that supersedes our own, which in turn does its own thing, and as a result all we can predict about the future is that it will become utterly unpredictable – all truisms will fail, we’ll be flying blind. The idea [read full post]

Creating Autonomous Machines vs. Creating Autonomous Humans: What's the Difference?

“Should we regulate the creation of autonomous robots? If yes, then why not also regulate the creation of autonomous humans?” While I struggle to understand Dr. Lin’s title, “What if Your Robot is the Devil,” he brings up some excellent questions of moral and ethical philosophy – albeit expressed somewhat as parable.  In other words, who are we to regulate the production of intelligence machines – we don’t even regulate our own production! And the issue is even deeper than is mentioned here – there’s also the issue of artificial consciousness and free-will and how those things are defined.  If any given [read full post]

R.U. Sirius ACCELER8ES - Human Technology and Cyber/CounterCulture gets a New Medium

“There’s a certain alertness to the science fictional nature of current reality.” -R.U. Sirius Technological and Cyber/CounterCultural icon R.U. Sirius has a new online venture:  ACCELER8OR.  Sirius is kind of a lost breed of futurist/humanist/guy-who-makes-you-question-the-real – a person who can wax technological and also weave in various means of and perspectives on organic cognitive expansion…  or something (the vagueness, or openness to interpretation is kind of a plasticity of ideas vs. the brick wall of beliefs sorta perspective). As is evident, describing the person requires a lot of slashes and hyphens, so ANTHROBOTIC recommends you set an ACCELER8OR bookmark and/or [read full post]

Artificial Brain: Achieved. More than 12 Seconds of Memory: Not Yet

“The artificial microbrain consists of about 40 to 60 rat neurons and is capable of sustaining 12 neuronal seconds of network activity.” While living in a petri dish and dumber than…  well, not a rock, but dumb – it is still a new form of artificial intelligence.  At least, as we understand intelligence, i.e., emanates from the brain as an organ and not from a spooky vengeful deity. There’s a simple exercise you can do to understand how fast information technology changes.  Pick up your smartphone, and take a moment to consider what it can do now that was quite literally impossible only three years ago. So… what will we see in the next four?  Where should we invest? The exponential changes in means (mobile – ubiquitous), content (social + data heavy), and access (global – with serious penetration and technological leapfrogging in the developing world) will continue to change the world, with the rate of change increasing itself… [VIA JAKE BREWER VIA FAST CO]
